Cylindrical Blazingstar “Violent Revealing” EP Review

Let’s start by acknowledging that “Violent Revealing” is an exceptional name for a debut metal EP. It quickly sets the stage, and after the curtains rise, the music doesn’t disappoint

Cylindical Blazingstar are a four piece sludge band out of Michigan. They formed after the dissolution of Michigan hardcore band PIT, and you definitely still get some of that hardcore edge. They’ve already been playing throughout Michigan and the Midwest, and from all indications they put on an excellent show. Not necessarily relevant to the music itself, but it’s worth pointing out that Mitch of Cold as Hell DIY formed and plays guitar for Cylindrical Blazingstar, and has been a supportive and outspoken member of the Michigan and greater Midwest music community.

The toan and riffs have arrived. Cylindical Blazingstar blazes through tracks with screeching violence and the thick and viscous DNA of bands like Electric Wizard, Eyehategod, and The Melvins running through their veins. Everything is drenched in distortion and fuzz, making the music feel aggressive and distant, like a demon shrieking from a portal beyond. I’m going to say something that will probably be controversial to some shitheads, but we really need more female screamers in metal. The shrieks on this album sit so perfectly in the arrangement, hanging with the cymbals and leaving lots of room of for the fuzzy guitars, subsonic basslines, and booming drums. Speaking of the guitars and bass, we’ve got riffs a plenty; slow riffs, fast riffs, scary chuggy heavy riffs, full of thick tone riffs. Oh yes, we’ve got riffs.

Can we talk about my favorite track, “Fuck Your Friends?” Of course we can, it’s my blog. I like the temporary step away from the shrieks for this song, especially as it makes the lyrics more discernible, and the lyrics of this song in particular are unhinged and a lot of fun. I really enjoy the way the main riff is delivered on this track as well; starting out on the bass with the guitar joining soon into the song as the drums thump and crash away.

“Violent Revealing” is not only exceptionally named, but an exceptional debut EP from Cylindrical Blazingstar. It feels heavy, raw, violent, and dirty in all the right ways. Cylindrical Blazingstar feel destined to be titans on the scene.
