Covid round 2 was not as bad as Covid round one, but was not fun.

Chris Oliver “Guitar Zero” Sep 16
I’ve talked about Chris’s music before via the excellent Detroit area band “Vellows.” Mr. Oliver takes the opportunity to go wild with his solo content with expectantly fantastic drumming, and novel experimental elements that kind of remind me of Japanese jazz and anime openers.
PFFU “Golden” Sep 20
This song is a full on shoegaze dream. Plug in some headphones and just drift away for five and a half minutes. Love how chill it is in comparison to recent release “(basking }} basking)”. Vibes? Vibes.
Jolie Holland “Orange Blossoms” Sep 20
I don’t know how the fuck I forgot about Jolie Holland for almost a decade, but I’m so glad I came back to her music. I’ve got a feeling her upcoming album “Haunted Mountain” (10/06/23) is going to be one of my favorite albums this year as she continues delivering deeply soulful and jazzy songwriter tunes. “Orange Blossoms” is an intoxicating slow waltz.
Sugar Tradition “Fragile” Sep 21
I’m pretty sure these Detroit dudes are pretty young, but their music comes straight out of 60’s garage rehearsal, and it’s fucking great. Actually one of the first bands I did a review on as well. (Check out 2021’s “Sugar Shack” as it is quite good.)
Post Eden “Ruins” Sep 22
This song feels, Epic? Some long songs can drag, some just take you on a journey. This is the latter. The beginning kind of reminds me of Dinosaur Jr. with its fuzzy, frantic guitar, and the slower end half just feels, BIG.
Hey hey, I also release some stuff. A soft, sad fingerstyle song called “Creeping Corporeal Creature” by Justin HK. You can check it out on this very playlist. Next week has an exciting release too, with the arrival of “Art Vanguard 2: Fart Vanguard” by The Existential Dead on October 6th. Check out TV Head (also on this DWR HI 5 playlist) to get yourself hype!
