HI 5 11/26/22

It’s getting pretty close to end of year wrap up stuff, and I’m really excited to… even figure out what exactly the fuck imma’ do. Anyways, MUSIC OF NOW!

Yb. “Blackphemy” Nov 22

I’ve put Yb. in one of these before. His music is soulful and full, a really cool spot between indie rock and R&B. “Blackphemy” has a great heartbeat to it.

The Mountain Goats “Mark On You (The Jordan Lake Sessions Volume 5)” Nov 18

The Mountain Goats have been one of my favorite bands, since something like 16. I still love every release, and these Jordan Lake Sessions capture their restless energy really well.

Billacheck “How It Happen” Nov 23

I don’t know a lot about sports, but I know that this a great fucking rap name. Love the low and loose delivery, shit’s smooth.

Blast Vegas “3:1 Ratio” Nov 25

The second single from Blast Vegas proves they can keep their manic energy, and still change it up. The end of this song gives me some Black Sabbath vibes that are to fucking die for.

Blood Rune Sigil “Blood Moon” Nov 24

Make Thanksgiving metal again. I’ve been following Blood Rune Sigil for a while, and it seems appropriate I finally bring some metal into HI 5 with some dudes from the Detroit Scene. Doomy vibes on this’un.

HI 5 10/23/22

I’M LATE! Well, I set the schedule so maybe not. Music. MUSIC!

Coconut Wolf -“Fresh Prince Of Self Flair” October 14

Love the floaty, breezy beat. Dudes flow kind of reminds me of MF DOOM, so great.

hey, nothing – “i haunt ur dreams” October 12

Emo folk pop. Love the aesthetic.

Wunderhorse – “Butterflies” October 7

Off of the full album Cub, “Butterflies” has some pretty epic post-rock vibes, and has some Pink Floyd flavor when the vocals kick in, satisfying and climactic song.

Fazing – “Be My Boo” October 9

I’ll be your boo. I love bedroom pop, and I love the low post-punk style vocals. There’s a really solid warmth to the production that feels like a lo-fi blanket.

Loops & Loops – “Reflection on Where The Grass Don’t Grow” October 21

Off of the full album Analog Alchemy, “Reflection on Where The Grass Don’t Grow” offers a depth of sound and richness that is usually only on offer from industry vets like Brian Eno. Loops & Loops ambient undertakings are always a vibe.

P.S.: The Existential Dread just released a new single(with more soon to come), EFFECT, which you can check out wherever you listen, or right here.

HI 5 10/8/22

I don’t know if I explicitly wasn’t putting hip-hop on here, but I’m changing that this week regardless.

Hippie Jon “Lately I’ve Been Crazy” October 1

I’ve technically covered Hippie Jon before, way back at Exfer, but I missed most of his set. Shame. Hippie Jon’s music has a Lo-Fi swagger that’s difficult to describe exactly. His music seems to follow his own rules, and I love it.

DWY “Self-Contained” September 23

Honestly, I’ve been finding some fantastic shit of spotify’s Fresh Finds. This song is minimalistic and strikes at the core of R&B, with soulful guitar and quietly powerful vocals, all wrapped with perfectly subtle production.

Dre Wave$ “WEIGHT” September 16

Man, I don’t fucking know how to write about Hip-Hop but here we go. I love the cruisey beat, and Wave$ flow is good. Fuck me man. Amateur shit on my end.

nobigdyl. “SLEEPIN!” September 30

Look, is it my love of MF DOOM that is subconsciously making me pick hip hop songs with ALL CAPS. Probably. I dig dyl’s delivery, it is appropriately chill, his flow is “Handsome like Bradley Pitt.” Plus I love the beepy beat.

Scumbag Fred “Broke Boy Rich” June 29, 2019

So, old shit, but, Scumbag Fred is like the only indie rapper I know. Also, we DM’d a bit way back. I think we were both high, and he was trying to get me to buy merch. Who knows, told him I loved the punk influence in his shit. Still do. Anyways “Scumdog Millionaire” is a great album, so listen to that shit.

P.S. I recently released a weird ass symphony with vocals and shit, which you should check out on Bandcamp.
